The Superior Court of Justice (STJ) denied on Tuesday (7) two appeals involving the process of indemnification of residents affected by the collapse of the Palace 2 Building, which took place in February 1998, in Rio de Janeiro.
With the decision, the process should return to the Court of Justice of Rio, where it is in the execution phase. About R$ 30 million should be allocated to the victims. The funds come from the sale of land owned by Construtora Sersan, which belonged to former federal deputy Sérgio Naya, who died in 2009.
The Palace 2 building was located in Barra da Tijuca, west of the state capital. Before being completely demolished, the building had two collapses: the first occurred at 3 am on February 22, 1998, with the collapse of columns 1 and 2 of the building, where there were 44 apartments, killing eight people.
On February 24 of the same year, the city of Rio announced the implosion of the building, but before the execution, scheduled for five days later, another collapse occurred, destroying 22 apartments. Then, it was necessary to carry out the total implosion of the building, which had 176 apartments.
