Stiglitz urges to implement tax laws not subject to evasion

He Prize Nobel of Economics 2001, Joseph Stiglitztold EFE this Tuesday that the issues that have to do with paying taxes “are complex” and that “it is essential to have laws tax laws that can be enforced and are not subject to evasion fiscal”.

Multinationals with an army of lawyers to evade taxes

In this way it can be guaranteed that all parties, including the multinationalspay what corresponds in taxeshe added Stiglitz in an interview via Zoom from New York.

He also indicated that “the multinationals they have an army of lawyers tributaries who work hard to design ways to avoid paying the taxes“, so “there must be an equivalent army of lawyers of the countries in development and of the markets emergencies that put a brake on them when they try to avoid the taxes“.

In his opinion, the voice of the countries in development and markets emerging “has to be stronger, we have to listen to them, the voice of a single country will not be heard by anyone, that is the reality.”

“But if all countries talk together as the African Union has done and as the African Union is beginning to do cooperation Latin American, together they can be heard,” he emphasized.

Stiglitzwho chairs the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT), is one of the 85 economists from around the world who on July 31 supported the Tax Justice Law proposed by the Government of Honduraswhich aims to improve equity in the development of the country.

The 85 economists consider that the changes proposed by the Government of the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, “are fundamental to reduce the inequality in Hondurassupport the development social and economic and close the fiscal loopholes that undermine the income tributaries”.

According to Castro, in Honduras There are ten large businessmen, who have not been identified, who do not pay taxesand a tax law promoted by his Government, which is still being debated in Parliament, is aimed at ensuring that those who earn the most pay more.

Every year Honduras loses millions for evasion tax and discharge corruption government, dragged on for many years and that even affects the Castro Government.

In the Summit of River of the G20 which will be held on November 18 and 19 in River de Janeiro is expected, among other agreements, to renew the commitment to promote for the first time in history a global agenda of taxation of wealthy individuals, which has already been signed by all the finance ministers of the group.

The agreements that can be reached in the Summit in tax matters can favor Hondurasaccording to Stiglitzwho said that if this country does not impose the taxes At least 15% would be favoring any multinational corporation, but it would lose that income.

Stiglitz considers that “it is essential” that Honduras adopt and incorporate the agenda now that all ministers of the G20 They agree that “we must go beyond this minimum tax on large companies to ensure that the very rich people will pay a minimum tax, at a minimum.”

Of Honduras He also expressed that since 2010 “the amount of income lost in tax incentives, which were ineffective, is greater than the country’s total debt”, which exceeds 20 billion dollars according to Tegucigalpa authorities.

“I am very pleased that now Honduras joins this legislation, this global movement of reform tax,” he said.

For this Tuesday it is expected that in Honduras the documentary Tax Wars, which collects the work that Stiglitz and others economists have been doing to get the international tax system to change.

With the documentary It is about convincing people that “we need reforms both in the multinational system and at the national level in the countries, and that there are reforms that can help build a better tax system that will contribute to a better world,” he said. Stiglitz.
