Minister Luiz Fux, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), scheduled a public hearing for November 11th to discuss the betting market online in Brazil. The games are promoted by national and international companies known as bets – English name that means bet.
The decision was signed this Thursday (26) amid discussions about the expenses of Bolsa Família beneficiaries with electronic betting.
According to the minister, the hearing is necessary to gather information about the impacts of bets on the mental health of the population and the economic effects on the Brazilian economy.
“The hearing of experts, regulatory entities, government bodies and representatives of civil society in general is not intended to collect legal interpretations of constitutional or legal texts, but rather to clarify the numerous technical issues”, stated Fux.
Regulation of the market for bets in Brazil it is discussed in the Supreme Court through a direct action of unconstitutionality filed on September 24th by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC).
The entity questions Law 14,790/2023, the rule that regulated betting online fixed quota. In the action, the CNC says that the legislation, by promoting the practice of gambling, causes negative impacts on less favored social classes. Furthermore, the entity cites the growth in household debt.
“The ease of access to the game online and the absence of effective policies to prevent and combat compulsive gambling directly affect the retail sector as individuals redirect the income intended to cover their basic needs to the unrestrained practice of gambling”, argues the confederation.
According to a survey released by the Central Bank, Bolsa Família beneficiaries spent R$3 billion on betsvia pix, last month.
