STF maintains extension of the Paulo Gustavo Law until December 2023

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) maintained, by a majority, the extension of the transfer of resources to support the cultural sector until December 31 of this year. The resources are foreseen in the Paulo Gustavo Law.STF maintains extension of the Paulo Gustavo Law until December 2023

The plenary’s decision was taken in a virtual trial held this Thursday (2) and endorsed an injunction that had already been granted by Minister Cármen Lúcia, in December of last year. The only contrary vote was from Minister André Mendonça.

Cármen Lúcia responded to a lawsuit filed by Rede Sustentabilidade against Provisional Measure 1,135/2022, which postponed Union assistance to the cultural and events sector due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. The MP was suspended, in November 2022, by the STF, maintaining the obligation of Union transfers to states and municipalities for the cultural sector.

However, in the action, the Sustainability Network argues that the federal government did not transfer resources in a timely manner to support the sector in 2022. Thus, the STF minister accepted the request to ensure financial support during 2023.
