Steps to choose the new Pope: Conclave must be called within 20 days

The period for the call of the conclave in which the new Pope will be elected once the funeral acts and the nine days of mourning begin

Pope Francis died on Monday, April 21 at 88 for a stroke, as confirmed by the Vatican. After his death, the protocol for the choice of the new Pontiff is activated.

The Vatican Law establishes a period of 20 days for the choice of Pope Francis’s successor. This period begins to pass after the funeral rites and the decreed days of mourning.

This period is known as the ‘novelty’, nine days of mourning in which the Pope’s body is shown to the faithful. Then, its funeral is celebrated, usually in the Plaza de San Pedro.

Steps for choice:

1. Vacant headquarters: The period known as “vacant headquarters” opens, without a prevailing pontiff, while the Church will be provisionally governed by the American shrimp, Kevin Farrell.

2. Towards the conclave: Financies The funeral rites, it is the moment of the conclave, the rite with which the cardinals under 80 years are locked in the Sistine Chapel to choose a successor. The Vatican Law stipulates that it must be convened within 20 days.

3. Deadlines to decide: Its duration is unpredictable because it will depend on the times chosen for their organization and how quickly the cardinals find a successor in the future conclave.

At the moment, the dean of the cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, is calling Rome to cardinals around the world to make the “congregations”, who will decide the times of this protocol as well as the date of the funeral.

4. In secret: The choice is celebrated in strict secret within the Sistine Chapel, famous for the paintings of Miguel Ángel.

5. Individual vote. Cardinals vote individually by their favorite candidate until a winner is determined, a process that can last several days.

6. Agreement. The duration of the conclave is unpredictable because it depends on the agreement that is achieved between the cardinals to choose a new Pope.

7. Ads. The only clue about the development of the choice is the smoke that emerges twice a day for the burning of the cardinal ballots. Black smoke indicates failure. The traditional White Smoking means that a new Pope has been chosen.

8. On the balcony. After the exit of the White Small, the new Pope usually appears on the balcony of the Plaza de San Pedro during the next hour.

9. Habemus Papam. The fastest rank that participates in the conclave will announce the decision with the words “Habemus Papam (in Latin,” we have a Pope “).

10. Presentation. Next, he will present the new Pontiff with the papal name that he has chosen, which may or may not be his original battery name.
For example, Pope Francis was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, but chose a different name for his papacy in honor of San Francisco de Asís.
