‘Stay in Mexico’, the program that will leave migrants for months at the border

‘Stay in Mexico’ is a program of the United States government through which people who request asylum must wait for the resolution in Mexican territory.

According to the program, for the duration of the process to be granted refuge or not – which can take months or years – they must be outside the United States.

On January 25, 2019, ‘Stay in Mexico’ was launched in San Ysidro, California, and later expanded to Calexico, El Paso, Laredo, Brownsville and Eagle Pass.

In the first 10 months of the application of ‘Stay in Mexico’, 51,407 migrants seeking asylum were returned to Mexican territory to await the resolution of their cases in Mexico, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

The program was suspended with the arrival of Joe Biden to the presidency of the United States. However, a Texas judge ruled to resume the program last August.
