The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) confirmed the total closure of the Stay in Mexico program, which forced migrants to wait in our country for the decision of the US authorities to cross the northern border, after the Supreme Court of that nation ordered suspend your application.
Stay in Mexico, formally known as the program of migratory stays in Mexico under Section 235 of the United States Immigration and Nationality Law, or also as Migrant Protection Protocols, was a unilateral measure implemented in the Trump administration.
When the Joe Biden administration began, it was ordered suspended, but last year Texas District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a ruling to restore it.
In a statement, the SRE pointed out the problems that this measure caused in our country, among them it mentions that on June 17, the International Organization for Migration notified it that there was no longer space available in the shelters of Tijuana, Baja California, due to what was necessary to close the entry of migrants through that border point.
The Biden government challenged Judge Kacsmaryk’s decision and on June 30 managed to get the Supreme Court of the United States to order its reversal, thus allowing an end to Stay in Mexico, a decision that the US Department of Homeland Security began implementing on June 8. August, and has now fully concluded, according to the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
The Government of Mexico, through the SRE, has been verifying that the necessary humanitarian attention is provided to the migrants participating in the program, including the administration of tests for covid-19 and the attention of positive cases, and will continue to guarantee their adequate stay and protection in national territory at this stage of completion of the implementation of Section 235 (b)(2)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Law of the United States
