“State Security is trying everything against me”: Opponent Luis E. López Torres

Luis Enrique López Torres

“It is constant harassment that they maintain on me,” denounced the opponent during an interview with ‘CubaNet’.

HAVANA, Cuba. – Cuban opposition figure Luis Enrique López Torres denounced, during an interview with CubaNeta new escalation of harassment against him undertaken by the neighbor couple who resides in the house adjacent to his.

“It is a constant harassment that these people maintain on me: they provoke me and try to create some situation so that I physically attack them and, thus, be able to entangle me in a common crime. They have even tried to manipulate other neighbors to do the same,” denounced the opponent.

López Torres lives in the last room of a narrow hallway located in the Arroyo Arenas neighborhood, in the Havana municipality of The Lisa. His home is adjacent to that of his harassers, which makes it easier for them to “bother” him, mainly at night, he says.

“They play loud music until late at night to not let me sleep and, on top of that, they start singing. They also block the hallway to prevent me from passing and creating arguments,” the opponent warned.

López Torres claims that his harassers have even threatened to kill him and that the authorities ignore his complaints.

“In the trial against this person who threatened to rip off my head, the only thing that was aired was my position against the regime and not the death threat he made to me. They only fined him and that’s it, because State Security protects them,” he assured.

López Torres specified that the trial hearing took place last June in the Municipal Court of Playa, in which one of his harassers – who in August 2024 warned him that he was going to “tear his head off with a machete” – was prosecuted for the crime of “threats.” The Court imposed a fine on him as a sentence.

In an audio recorded by López Torres, provided as evidence and made available to the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) of La Lisa, where the complaint was filed, in addition to the death threat, the aggressor is heard shouting expletives and saying that he is not “interested” in the Police.

Lázara Sandra Arias Ramos, a resident of the area, certified that the harassers and the sector head tried to use her to denounce the opponent for illicit sale of medicines, which she described as a “lie.”

“He had the medicines that I needed and he gave them to me, but Yanet [la vecina acosadora]He went and told the head of the sector just the opposite. They wanted me to show and say that Luis Enrique had sold them to me, but that is a lie and that’s what I stated,” the woman stressed.

CubaNet He tried insistently to contact the reported couple by telephone to obtain their version of the events; however, none of the calls were answered.

Last May, López Torres was interrogated by an instructor from Villa Marista, the main headquarters of the Cuban State Security. On that occasion, the agent involved tried to link him to the Cuba Primero organization and accused him of receiving financing from abroad.

The opponent belonged for several years to the “Orlando Zapata Tamayo” Civic Action Front, a non-governmental organization with which he participated in numerous protests in front of state institutions and on public roads. It is currently part of Cuba Independent and Democratic (CID).

“I feel afraid for my life, because State Security is trying everything against me through these people. They have already threatened me with death and, however, the authorities refuse to follow up on my complaints,” warned López Torres. He also claims that he has reported the situation on more than three occasions at the Seventh Station of the PNR of La Lisa, around two times at the Municipal Prosecutor’s Office of La Lisa and two more times at the General Directorate of the PNR.
