CDMX, Mexico. – Two State Security agents threatened this Wednesday Maricelis Cambara, mother of the director of the Cubalex Legal Information Center, Laritza Diversent. The repressors came to the home of Cambara, 65, with the aim of getting her to intercede in her daughter’s work as a human rights defender.
This “meeting” occurred just two days after Cubalex, together with Justicia 11J and the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights, will denounce the situation of political prisoners and how their release could be used as a bargaining chip by the dictatorship. Diversent thinks that this was the reason that led State Security to harass his mother on this occasion.
The repressors once again suggested to Cambara that she talk to her daughter so that she would stop “attacking the Revolution and speaking ill of the country.” In addition, they asked her to share with them information about the address of the lawyer in the United States, as well as other information. In exchange, the State would offer him medical care, which is supposedly free and universal in the country.
Cambara has a physical disability due to a childhood accident, which caused her to lose mobility in her left leg. According to what the officers told her, they have the power to facilitate surgery to improve her quality of life and alleviate the pain she suffers.
At the “meeting” the agents told the woman they knew that on January 17 she had visited the United States Embassy in Havana, where she had been denied a visa to travel to the United States. She also insinuated that they were not going to regulate her, as she had previously threatened. In each “encounter”, the political police try to affect Cambara emotionally, alluding to the possibility that she will not meet her daughter again.
In this regard, the lawyer Laritza Diversent declared to CubaNet that he will continue with his work. “My mom has health and physical conditions that are not ideal. This is a clear threat to my family because of the organization’s work,” she said.
The jurist confirmed that every time her family is attacked, she will expose the facts publicly as evidence of the repressive nature of the regime. “My mom is not an activist. She is just the mother of a human rights defender, ”she pointed out.
In August 2021, a repressor tacitly threatened Cambara that he even she could be judged for her daughter’s work. They also threatened her that they could intercept Diversent in the United States or another country and take her to Cuba to judge her. She even assured her that they could detain her grandson, Diversent’s son, in the United States and thus force the lawyer to turn herself in to free him. At that time, Cambara was with her convalescing mother, who died a few days later.
“The message is that they have it in their hands and can do whatever they want,” says the lawyer. Diversent holds the Cuban government responsible for any incident that affects her mother. “They are constantly torturing her and destabilizing her just for being my mother,” she said.
