Vaccination

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease and has been a major causes of child mortality in the world. The transmission of the virus occurs from person to person, by air, when coughing, sneezing, speaking or breathing. The disease is so contagious that an infected person can transmit the disease to 90% of close people who are not immunized. Therefore, vaccination against measles is extremely important. The vaccine is the main form of disease prevention.

The main symptoms of measles are red spots on the body and high fever, above 38.5 ° C, accompanied by cough, conjunctivitis, dripping nose or intense malaise. Cases may evolve to serious complications and cause intense diarrhea, ear infections, blindness, pneumonia and encephalitis (brain inflammation). Some of these complications may be fatal.

Initially, the disease manifests itself with high fever, malaise, runny nose, conjunctivitis, cough and lack of appetite. During this period, white spots (koplik) can be observed on the inner face of the cheeks. The red spots on the skin begin to appear behind the ears, spread throughout the body and, after three days, tend to decrease.

The vaccine is available at the UBS of the city of São Paulo from Monday to Friday, from 7am to 7pm, and on Saturdays and holidays in the Integrated AMAS/UBSS (outpatient medical care/Basic Integrated Health Units at the same time.

Certified

In 2016, Brazil received certification of the elimination of the virus that causes measles.

According to the Ministry of Health, in 2016 and 2017 no cases of the disease were confirmed. However, in 2018, with the large migratory flow associated with low vaccination coverage, the virus was circular again and, In 2019, Brazil lost the certification of “country free from measles virus”by registering more than 21,700 cases.

In June 2022, Brazil registered the last endemic case of Measles in Amapá. Therefore, In November last year, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) again certified Brazil as free from the circulation of the virus.
