State of Chiapas, in Mexico, reports more than 64,000 refugee applications between January and October

With thousands of migrants trying to reach the United States, the Mexican state of Chiapas, located on the southern border with Guatemala, concentrates the largest number of refugee applications in Mexico from January to October with 64,360, Mexican authorities said Wednesday.

The representative of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (Comar) in Chiapas, Alejandro Austria de la Vega, reported this figure on Wednesday and said that in the same period at the country level there were 97,973 requests.

According to Comar data, of the 64,360 refugee applicants in Tapachula, only about 36,000 have been able to obtain refugee status.

These people, upon being admitted as refugees, can obtain an applicant certificate where they are issued the Unique Population Registration Code (CURP) so that they can later go to the National Institute of Migration (INM) to request the Visitor Card.

“These figures indicate that we will be exceeding 100,000 refugee applicants in 2022 at the country level and we will be in the same trend, perhaps a little lower than in 2021, which was a historic year with 129,000 refugee applicants,” he explained.

He explained that in the state of Chiapas the requesting population is concentrated in the cities of Tapachula and Palenque.

Austria de la Vega specified that the countries leading the asylum requests are Honduras, Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua, in that order, but there is also a minimal flow of people from other continents such as migrants from Syria, Bangladesh and the India.

In recent years in Mexico there has been an increase in the arrival of migrants and therefore refugees from all continents, mostly of Central American origin.

On the other hand, this Wednesday the Ministry of the Interior, through the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred), the Comar and the United Nations Agency for Refugees (Acnur), began with the “Days for the Inclusion and No Discrimination” in Tapachula.

These conferences are held to make visible the reality that migrants, asylum seekers and refugees face on a daily basis in order to prevent and eliminate all types of discrimination practices, including xenophobia in their path and during their journey. stay in the country.
