On March 30, the doors of the new Jorge Chavez International Airport (AIJC), a terminal that will increase its passenger handling capacity and number of flights. In this way, Lima will become a hub for connection, but what about the rest of the country?
Look: Which country sent the most tourists to Peru in 2024?
It must be remembered that Lima Airport Partners (LAP) is the operator of the AIJC; Aeropuertos del Perú (AdP) is in charge of the terminals of Cajamarca, Iquitos, Pucallpa, Tarapoto, Trujillo, Talara, Tumbes, Chachapoyas, Huaraz, Pisco, Chiclayo and Piura; Andean Airports of Peru (AAP) has Arequipa, Juliaca, Tacna, Puerto Maldonado and Ayacucho; and Corpac is in charge of another 15.
LAP, since it obtained the concession in 2001 until 2024, contributed more than US$3,000 million to the State. Part of this money goes to a trust that should be used for the expansion and co-financing of the regional airports that were concessioned; However, sources from this newspaper stated that the State would not be using these resources appropriately.
“The trust has been accumulating many resources because the contracts of the AAP and AdP group have engineering that is subject to the National Public Investment System, which takes a long time in the processes, which means that the expropriated lands cannot yet be received for the terminals, as happened in Lima,” they explained.
CONCESSION PACKAGE
Regarding airports managed by Corpaclast year Proinversión reported that it will be awarded a package of eight terminals, which includes Chinchero (Cusco).
Otto Regalado, senior professor at ESAN Graduate School of Business and tourism specialist, pointed out that it is urgent that a private sector be in charge of operations in order to improve the infrastructure.

“It is very urgent to have the interior airports in optimal operation, especially with the opening of the new Jorge Chávez terminal. We must consider that currently the infrastructure in the interior of the country is deficient,” he assured.
Meanwhile, Martín La Rosa, representative of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), stated that he “does not take a dim view” of this tender because over time it has been shown that private administration is more effective. “We have to do joint work to encourage demand as well,” he added.
And when will this contest take place? Emerson Castro, director of the Proinversión Project Portfolio Directorate, explained that, in addition to Chinchero, the list includes Jaén, Huánuco, Jauja, Ilo, Rioja, Chimbote and Yurimaguas. The award would be made in 2026.
The representative of the promotion agency explained that, regarding the airport that is located in Cusco, they are waiting to see how the work progresses, which is at 15%, as he indicated that to place an operator certainty is needed as to when the work will be completed. .
“There are mechanisms that will be presented to the MTC. One of them is that the operator for Chinchero can support the works that remain to complete this project,” he detailed and explained that, for this to happen, the order that was given to Proinversión needs to be changed.
On the other hand, he explained that they are working on proposals so that the concession of all airports allows them to accelerate processes and shorten deadlines.
