AREQUIPA, Peru – A Cuban teenager of just 14 years old took his own life in Sancti Spíritus this Sunday after jumping off the Yayabo River bridge.
The fact was made known by the opposition Librado Linares through a publication on X (formerly Twitter), and later by the independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada in his Facebook profile.
According to reports, the incident occurred on the pedestrian bridge that connects the Jesús María neighborhood with the Colón neighborhood, in the provincial capital city.
“The state divers arrived late,” testified some local residents, who were in charge of finding the teenager and pulling him out of the river about two hours after his death.
The identity of the deceased has not been identified. Two photos taken during the rescue operations show the moment when bystanders pull the body out of the river, while dozens of people from the bridge watch the events unfold.
Less than a month ago, another similar news shook the world of sport on the Island when Cesar Perez Cruz, Cuban baseball umpire and softballtook his own life on Tuesday, August 13, in Guantanamo.
According to journalist Daniel de Malas, director of the media, Full Swingthe referee decided to end his life by suffocating him with a rope. He was 72 years old.
De Malas recalled that Pérez Cruz had been sanctioned by the National Baseball Commission for the entire season, for the well-known case of Ricardo Campanioni’s “name change” on April 29, 2024, in the National Series.
“César Pérez was the first Cuban international softball referee and he acted in multiple events. Those who knew him remember him as a professional and a good person,” said De Malas.
