Stalin González: Maduro must also show that he wants to reach agreements

Stalin Gonzalez, leader of Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) and delegate of the Unitary Platform at the Negotiation and Dialogue Table in Mexico, pointed out that the international conference, organized by the president Gustavo Petro and held on April 25 in Bogotá, should be seen as a mechanism, an impulse to continue.

“For any negotiation, the environment needs to improve and the conference helps to make that happen and the negotiation process that we have advanced in Mexico can be resumed. We must not lose that momentum. We must understand that world geopolitics has changed and determine how to take advantage of that for the benefit of Venezuelans,” González said in a press release released this Thursday, April 27.

The opposition leader pointed out that the ruler Nicolás Maduro “It must also show that it wants to reach agreements and we will continue working to achieve it, because in the end those affected by the situation we are experiencing are the Venezuelans. But it must be clear that this conference was given only because both parties agreed, otherwise the countries would not have attended.

He added that the only way to comply with the creation of the Social Agreement Fund is if the other party works together with the delegation “to unlock the funds.”

He recalled that there are seven months left in 2024 and to make a competitive election time is needed, “for the Electoral Observation of the European Union to come and incorporate the recommendations of the report, time is needed.”

Gónzalez said that, in Bogotá, “we saw 20 countries from various continents, but mainly from the region and Europe, asking us how they help to advance in reaching agreements between Venezuelans.”

He referred that “the great consensus that there was in this conference in the final declaration is that things must change in Venezuela because they are not well; and they are clear that for migration to stop the economy must improve and for that a political change is needed in Venezuela.”

For the leader, the initiative of President Petro’s government is due to the fact that “it is clear that we share more than 2,200 kilometers of border and that what happens on this side has repercussions on the other. We believe that in Colombia and the region there is a commitment to achieve democratic and economic stability in Venezuela.”
