SRE assists refugees in Guatemala who fled violence in Chiapas

“The SRE, through the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala and the consulate in Quetzaltenango, provides the support and assistance required by Mexicans in the Department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, offering immediate protection to women, children and the elderly, and remains attentive to the situation faced by the Mexican community that crossed the border,” it said in a statement.

The Secretariat explained that the requirements of the Mexicans from Chiapas who have taken refuge in Guatemala are related to health, clothing and, in some cases, requests to return to Mexico.

This week, around 300 residents of Chiapas were forcibly displaced to Guatemala, a country that borders the state in southern Mexico, to flee the violence unleashed by clashes between groups allegedly linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel.

Residents of the Sierra region of Chiapas have said they are fleeing because criminal groups are forcing them to join their ranks.

On Thursday, authorities in the department of Huehuetenango, in the municipality of Cuilco, Guatemala, sheltered displaced Mexicans in a school and two religious temples and indicated that the Mexican government had not sent support for the compatriots.
