The Peruvian Liquefied Gas Society (SPGL) points out that it is important that the government does not stop including in the projects that promotes a significant part of the population that depends on liquefied oil gas (LPG) for cooking, and that it is the one that is in the greatest situation of vulnerability.
Of the 10 million Peruvian homes, 7 million use LPG to cook; Around 3.6 million are in a situation of vulnerable, poor or extreme poor. Despite this, only 1 million 200 thousand of these homes receive the FISE discount voucher that allows them to acquire the LPG ball with a discount. That is, there are more than 2 million 400 thousand vulnerable families without access to this mechanism.
These vulnerable families are basically concentrated in the Sierra and Rural Jungle of our country, and in their precarious situation they are forced to cook with firewood, coal, dung, or other contaminating fuels with the dire consequences that this entails for its health.
In that sense, strengthening and greater scope of the FISE discount voucher program to cover these families could eradicate energy poverty in our country.
“Expanding the Discount Vale de Discount subsidy is essential to ensure that the most needy families have access to a clean and safe fuel such as LPG, preventing them from having to resort to less efficient and polluting options,” said Jovan Pastor, president of the SPGL.
Although the government’s proposal seeks to bring natural gas to various regions, including Cusco and other high Andean areas, which we greet, from the SPGL we call not to neglect the most vulnerable homes in our country, which will hardly access the natural gas, and that they do not receive the discount voucher and continue to use highly polluting fuels to cook, condemning them to an energy poverty situation.
“The LPG remains a crucial source of energy in many areas of the country. Ensure that all Peruvians, especially the most vulnerable, have access to this resource is essential to build an inclusive and fair energy policy,” Pastor added.
The SPGL also emphasized the need to guarantee a fair and balanced energy transition, which does not leave anyone behind and avoid forcing the most disadvantaged families to use polluting fuels to meet their basic needs.
