Speed Awareness Week kicks off in NY

NEW YORK.- “New York Speed Awareness Week” kicked off earlier this week in this state to increase enforcement of people who drive at unsafe speeds, Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

There will be a “Speed Catches You” PSA and it will be crucial not only to catch speeding drivers, but also to encourage all drivers to maintain a safe speed on our roadways, and I encourage all New Yorkers to take your time and get to your destination safely,” he says.

In 2021, there were 353 fatal crashes, an 11% increase from the previous year, attributed to unsafe speeds and resulting in the deaths of 389 people, including cyclists, pedestrians and drivers themselves, according to data from the Institute for Management and Traffic Safety.

During last year’s awareness week, 23,087 people received speeding tickets and 32,170 received traffic violations, which also included drunk and distracted driving.

“There are countless risks and tragic consequences of speeding, and I want all New Yorkers to be aware of the speed limits in their area,” Hochul said in a statement.
