Specialized US media highlights anti-Covid-19 vaccination in Cuba

According to an article published on the Pandem-IC site, the island is doing a stellar job, outperforming its upper-middle income peers, currently almost completing the primary vaccination cycle, and far ahead of most other nations. .

The report, entitled How is the best vaccinated developing country in the world doing?, praised the Antillean territory’s ability to produce its own immunizers: Abdala, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus.

“When it comes to total vaccine coverage, Cuba is currently number one among developing countries. That is a remarkable achievement. It is the result of a solid performance in terms of primary vaccination coverage (where it ranks number 3) and position one in booster coverage,” the publication acknowledged.

In a comparison between the Omicron and Delta variants, Pandem-IC reported that new cases in Cuba did not exceed, or even come close to, their previous peak, which is in stark contrast to most other countries in the world.

Along the same lines, he added, the impact on mortality has been small, which is a more common pattern internationally.

Cuba’s experience has been truly remarkable, the newspaper considered, adding that thanks to the development and production of domestic immunogens, vaccine coverage could be increased very quickly.

“The success of vaccination seems to have achieved very good results, especially on the mortality side. (…) The results are impressive”, she praised.

According to a review on its page, Pandem-IC monitors Covid-19 by World Bank (WB) income classification and between regions, highlighting inequalities in the results of the pandemic and underlining the need for equitable solutions.

Its creator, the senior economic adviser at the World Bank Group, Philip Schellekens, referred on his social networks that the Cuban experience needs to be emulated.

“The history of Cuba is a history that we would like to see repeated in other parts of the world. It is of fundamental importance that vaccine production is less geographically concentrated and that manufacturing capabilities are more widely shared,” he argued.
