The Santa Cruz urban census of 1888 for the capital gives a total of 10,288 inhabitants. Some curiosities:
More than 50% of the population was a minor, that is, they were under 18 years of age. It was a city of “pelaos”.
There were only 94 widowers, but instead there were 502 widows. It is obvious that the men died very young, the women did not.
There were more than 6,000 women… but only just over 4,000 men. Marked gender imbalance and there were 3,300 single men for 4,800 single women…
7,817 were of “white race” while 2,395 were indigenous. That is the myth of the Spanish Holy Cross.
Among the foreigners, the 31 Argentines stand out, followed by the 20 Italians. The Spaniards were only 4, curious right?
There are just over 1,200 farmers, merchants and professionals, who probably make up the elite. The rest are arts and crafts.
The women’s trades are interesting: 200 cigar makers, 1,600 seamstresses and 1,200 domestics.
Latest interesting facts: there were 117 tailors, certainly more than there are today, and 7 printers.
