The international section of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOEsocial democracy) lamented the lack of democratic standards in Nicaragua’s municipal elections, held this Sunday.
“The municipal elections held in 153 municipalities in Nicaragua are a farce and a mockery of democracy,” said the PSOE’s Department of International Relations on its Twitter account.

The ruling party in Spain (in coalition with the leftist United We Can) appealed to the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to release people detained for political reasons, stop their authoritarian drift and respect the public liberties of Nicaraguans.
“Ortega must release political prisoners and abandon the restriction of rights and freedoms, as well as the persecution of opponents and the media,” the political party’s tweet continued.
The regime “is exposed”
For the opposition political activist in exile, Luis Blandón, the condemnation of the lack of democratic competition in the Nicaraguan municipal elections made by the PSOE of Spain together with other international actors such as the Chilean president Gabriel Boric “undresses the electoral farce” of the regime from Managua.
“We have seen how the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship is evidence of the false elections that it has been carrying out in recent years. It is evident to the international community that they are elections that have been tailored to Ortega without electoral competition, but the most serious of all is that there are no political rights in Nicaragua,” said the also member of the Renovating Union (Unamos). , formerly known as the Sandinista Renovation Movement (MRS).
