The Colombian singer, who has been an ambassador for Unicefis accused
of having defrauded 14.5 million euros (US$14.8 million) in taxes during the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, reported BBC Mundo.
However, Shakira pleaded not guilty. On Wednesday, July 27, she refused to reach an agreement to lower the sentences and avoid a trial.
At the same time, the artist said she was the victim of “persecution” and expressed her intention to reach the end of the process.
In this case, it will be up to a Barcelona court to decide whether to open an oral trial against the Colombian singer. Until the last moment, the singer has open the possibility of reaching an agreement with the prosecution.
The prosecution accuses Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, full name of the artist, of having simulated during the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 not residing in Spain and of hiding her income through a network of companies based in tax havens.
