Spanish president says Brazil's leadership at COP30 is inspiring

The President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, praised this Friday (7) the role played by Brazil in the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held from November 10th to 21st, in Belém. The European president said, at a press conference in the Blue Zone, that the South American country is an example to be followedfor taking seriously the science-based climate commitments.Spanish president says Brazil's leadership at COP30 is inspiring

“Brazil’s leadership is not only inspiring, but it also reminds us of something important, which is which side we should be on. On the side of reason, of science, and not of denialism and, therefore, deception. On the side of hope in the face of fear”, said the president, who is participating in the Climate Summit. The event precedes COP30 and brings together heads of state, government leaders and high-level representatives from more than 70 countries.

“Ten years ago, the world signed a very important agreement, the Paris Agreement, a pact with our own future as humanity, an agreement that continues to be the best tool, the best instrument we have to face the climate emergency in a supportive, effective and responsible way. And today, more than ever, we need to return to that spirit”, he added.

Sánchez highlighted the impacts of the climate crisis in Spain and defended the urgency of implementing effective actions to prevent these events from recurring around the world.

“In the last 12 months, we have experienced countless climate emergencies: floods, a terrible storm, fires and unprecedented heat waves. So far this decade, the climate emergency has claimed more than 20,000 lives in our country,” said Sánchez.

“We had dramatic consequences this summer, for example, like the storm DANA [Depressão Isolada em Altos Níveis] in Valencia. It is also an economic and social impact, as many vital sectors were affected, such as tourism and agribusiness in our country.”

The Spanish president said he was optimistic about the results that could be achieved during COP30, as long as other countries follow the path of multilateralism. And not the isolationist example of the United States.

“The new US administration is withdrawing from much of the multilateral agenda. I believe that from the perspective of other powers, such as the European Union, the commitment is firm. We have reached an agreement to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050,” said Sánchez.

“I believe that what Europe needs to do is what Spain has been advocating: open up, create and build bridges with other societies, with other regional blocs and, with luck, under the Brazilian presidency, we will be able to sign this important agreement between the European Union and Mercosur”, he added.
