The Popular Party (PP) in Spain demands that the government of President Pedro Sánchez rule on the need to maintain the extradition treaty with Venezuela, which dates back to 1989, emphasizing the cases of Rolando Figueroa and Ernesto Luis Quintero.
Similarly, the PP calls for the suspension of those extradition treaties with those countries that are considered not to guarantee the independence of their institutions, do not respect the presumption of innocence, and where judicial instances are used to persecute those who warn the authorities.
The “popular” presented a non-law proposal in the Congress of Deputies of Spain, by which they seek that the Lower House urge the Executive to act in this line both with Venezuela and with other countries. In the case of Figueroa and Quintero, the PP points out that the Ministry of the Interior has twice denied the request for asylum that they have filed despite the alleged threats received from our country.

The PP recalled that the European Union maintains individual sanctions against high-ranking officials of the Nicolás Maduro administration and they believe that there is no independent justice. Rolando Figueroa, linked to the Voluntad Popular party, was denied political asylum in April 2022. He was admitted to the Teixeiro prison on June 16, 2021 after being requested by the Venezuelan authorities for the alleged commission of the crime of aggravated fraud in the sale of medicines, which he would have committed in 2012.
On the other hand, the extradition of the Venezuelan Ernesto Quintero from Spain to our country, which was going to take place on February 12, 2022was suspended at the last minute for having tested positive for covid-19 when a final test was carried out at the Soto del Real prison, where he remains confined.
