Spanish minister travels to Mexico after controversy "pause" in bilateral relations

The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, and the Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, signed four agreements on Wednesday with the aim of “further accelerating the close relations and dynamism between two countries that share history, language, interests and values “. The Spanish minister traveled to Mexico City in full controversy over the proposal of the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to establish a “pause” in bilateral relations due to “the abuses” of Spanish companies during previous governments.

López Obrador celebrated the arrival of Albares, but referred to the issue again during his usual morning press conference. “When I speak of a pause, it is so that a reality is internalized politically. The previous relationship with Spain was characterized by the abuse of Spanish companies in our country, and although it takes a lot of work to accept it, to understand it, Mexico is not a land of conquest “he said today.

“I don’t know very well what pause means, in any case what my visit today does is accelerate that relationship, which is nothing new, it has been accelerating for many years,” said Albares. “Year after year there are more Spaniards in Mexico and more Mexicans in Spain,” she said. Albares stressed that his official visit to Mexico aims to “relaunch new aspects of our relationship.” “We have also agreed to begin the tasks so that there is a new binational commission as soon as possible, which has not met since 2017,” he specified.

With the signing of these agreements, both countries also issued a joint statement reaffirming “the value they attach to their brotherly relationship” and agree to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Spain, which It will take place on March 28.
