Spanish Foreign Minister respects Venezuela's "sovereign decision" to recall its ambassador

José Manuel Albares said that the Government of Spain is focused on having the best relations with Venezuela and that the foreign ministers are the least qualified to qualify the situation in a country

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed on Friday that the decision by Nicolás Maduro’s administration to recall its ambassador in Madrid, Gladys Gutiérrez, for consultations is “sovereign.”

“Summoning an ambassador, I have done it, and calling for consultations, are sovereign decisions of each State,” Albares said when asked about the subject at the RNE.

He stressed that foreign ministers should not give their opinion on the internal policies of a nation, saying that those who occupy the portfolio are “professors of constitutional law” and are “the last person who has to use qualifiers”; although he did insist that they work to have the best relations with Venezuela.

“Every time I speak, and together with the President of the Government we make decisions on foreign policy, I think of the Spaniards who live in Venezuela, the Venezuelans who live in harmony in Spain” and of “business interests, of very important companies,” explained the minister. “That is what guides me,” he added.

He said that for the moment only Ecuador and Panama are the countries that openly recognize the opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and there were two others that retracted their recognition -one of them, Peru- so he emphasized that the publication of the disaggregated data is needed to know the detailed results of the presidential elections of July 28.

In this regard, the Spanish foreign minister said that work is being done to establish a common position in the European Union on Venezuela and to promote effective dialogue among Venezuelans, as well as negotiations, to find solutions to the current situation.

The administration of Nicolás Maduro will summon the Spanish ambassador to Venezuela, Ramón Santos Martínez, for this Friday, September 13th in order to clarify the recent statements by the Minister of Defense of that country, Margarita Robles, who described the Venezuelan government as a “dictatorship.”

Foreign Minister Yván Gil announced the decision on his social networks and added that they will call the Venezuelan ambassador to Spain, Gladys Gutiérrez, for consultation.

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in response to the insolent, interventionist and rude statements by the Spanish Minister Margarita Robles, which point to a deterioration in relations between the two countries, has decided to call the Venezuelan ambassador accredited to the Kingdom of Spain, Gladys Gutiérrez, for consultations; at the same time it has summoned the Spanish ambassador accredited in Caracas, Ramón Santos Martínez, to appear on Friday, September 13 at the headquarters of the Ministry of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs,” Gil indicated.
