Spaniard Sergio Gómez signs for Manchester City

Defender Sergio Gómez has signed as a new player for English Manchester City, the club announced in a statement.

Gómez signs for the next four seasons with the Mancunian club, and will wear the number 21 that the legend “citizen” David Silva wore in his day.

The 21-year-old player arrives from RSC Anderlecht in the Belgian league, where he was recognized as the best player of the year after playing 49 games, with 7 goals and 15 assists.

He is a notable reinforcement for his versatility, since he began his career as an attacking midfielder, but has been playing as a left-back, a position that Guardiola needs to strengthen after the loss of the Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko (Arsenal).

“I am very happy and proud to join Manchester City, it is the best team in England,” Gómez told the sky-blue team media as soon as he was introduced.

In addition, the Catalan footballer praised his compatriot Pep Guardiola, with whom he shares football origins: “With Guardiola I have the opportunity to learn and evolve with the most exceptional coach in the world of football.”

“The number of titles they have won in recent years has been incredible, and the style of play of Pep’s teams is one of the most exciting in Europe. Playing and being guided by him is going to be something very special »explained Gómez about the new club and his coach.

Txiki Begiristáin, director of football for Manchester City, wanted to welcome his new player: “He is a very exciting young talent, and his growth in recent seasons has been impressive. He is a very gifted defender with great potential».

Trained in the lower categories of FC Barcelona, the player born in Badalona left the Blaugrana discipline in 2018 without having made his debut with the first team, to try his luck at Borussia Dortmund, where he hardly had any chances.

However, thanks to a two-year loan spell at SD Huesca, with whom he also secured promotion to the First Division, Gómez relaunched his career and caught the attention of Anderlecht.

In this case, it was another City legend and Anderlecht manager, former footballer Vincent Kompany, who convinced the player to join the Belgian team.

“The call from Kompany was the key, I really wanted him to go there, he gave me the confidence I needed,” Sergio Gómez explained to EFE last summer after his signing.

In addition, this move allowed him to continue developing as a left-back: «I finished the season with Pacheta in the lane with Huesca, they had liked it a lot. It’s hard for me, especially defensively, but Kompany is helping me a lot.”

During his short career, Sergio Gómez has won two European Championships with Spain (under-17 and under-19) in 2017 and 2019 respectively, and also achieved a sub-championship in the world under-17, scoring two goals in the final against the champion, England (5-2).

On that occasion, Gómez was the second best player in the tournament, curiously behind the Englishman Phil Foden, with whom he will now share a dressing room. EFE
