Spain will grant nationality to 135 former Nicaraguan political prisoners sent to Guatemala

The government of Spain offered to nationalize the 135 former Nicaraguan political prisoners released and taken in by Guatemala on September 5, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares reported this Friday before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Spanish Congress.

On this occasion, “first-degree relatives in a precarious situation” will also benefit, according to the official.

“Spain, with our current foreign policy, is and will always be home to our Latin American brothers who defend freedom and democracy,” added Albares.

One month after the release of the prisoners, the government of Daniel Ortega has not revealed the names of the released people and maintains total secrecy on the matter.

The Spanish government’s measure is an extension of the offer made to 222 former political prisoners banished by the government of Daniel Ortega in February 2023. The former inmates were then sent to the United States where they were given medical assistance.

“Our commitment to them is firm,” Albares declared about the recent former prisoners.

The Sandinista government stripped the Nicaraguan nationality of the 135 former political prisoners who were sent to Guatemala a week later, alleging that they committed crimes against the State. Those released from prison also had their property confiscated.

The government of Daniel Ortega has stripped Nicaraguan nationality from more than 250 opponents, including academics, students, as well as social leaders of the Central American country since the beginning of the sociopolitical crisis in 2018.
