The application has resolved some 35,000 requests from foreigners to opt for nationality in one month, according to the Spanish Ministry of Justice. By 2021, more than 6,000 Venezuelans obtained Spanish citizenship
The Spanish Ministry of Justice launched an application in order to lighten and process some 350,000 applications for nationality, many from Latin America, because solving this funnel has become “a matter of State,” according to the owner of that portfolio, Pilar Llop.
The application, which seeks to automate those procedures that are not decisive, managed to resolve some 35,000 pending applications in the first month of entry into force. In Llop’s opinion, with the operation of this technological tool, it will be possible to “unblock” the issue of nationalities because the applicants have been waiting “a long time.”
By 2021, according to data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics, 144,012 foreigners were counted who obtained Spanish nationality, including more than 6,000 Venezuelans. Most of the beneficiaries were Moroccans, with some 42,000 successful applications, followed by Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia with an average of 8,300 requests in each case.
Those who wish to have Spanish nationality by residence must wait at least 10 years to be able to obtain it legally and continuously. It can also be granted if there is a letter of nature issued by the Government of Spain at its discretion; by origin, by possession of status or by choice.

Spanish nationality is also granted to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from that country.
The Head of Mission of the Embassy of Spain in Venezuela, Ramón Santos, together with the Consul General of Spain in the country, Juan José Buitrago, delivered in july 2022 some 70 passports to those Venezuelan citizens who were nationalized through the procedure of granting citizenship to descendants of Sephardim from that European country.
The delivery of the documents took place at the headquarters of the Hogar Canario de Venezuela where several representatives of the Council of Spanish Residents in our country were present, along with other members of the community of the Iberian country who live in this territory.
On the other hand, the NGO Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance (CEAR) that works in the Iberian country revealed on Thursday June 16, 2022 that Venezuelans and Colombians residing in that nation are the ones who processed the most asylum applications in 2021, this being the third consecutive year that this trend has been repeated.
This was announced by this organization through the report entitled “Refugees in Spain and Europe” of 2022, in which they point out that despite repeating this trend, there is a significant decrease in asylum requests in that European country due to part of Venezuelans and Colombians, obeying more to the closure of borders by covid-19 than because the desire to require protection has decreased.
