Spain ordered Interpol to hand over Hugo "El Pollo" Carvajal "immediately" to the US

The National Court of Spain only took five days to make the decision to extradite Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajal to the US after the Strasbourg Court gave the green light

The National Court of Spain ordered this Tuesday, July 18, Interpol the “immediate” handover to the United States (USA) of the former head of the Venezuelan intelligence services Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajal, who is requested by that country for alleged crimes of drug trafficking .

The magistrates of the National Court of Spain made the decision after the Court of Strasbourg authorized last Thursday July 13 to Madrid to proceed with the extradition of Carvajal, who has been in preventive detention for more than two years in a prison on the outskirts of the capital for fear that he would escape as happened the first time he was captured at the end of 2019.

However, the specific date for delivery is still unknown. In addition, it was ordered to notify the US embassy in Madrid and the director of the Estremera prison, where he is being held.

“El Pollo” Cavajal, through his defense, had appealed the decision of the Strasbourg Court, but it was dismissed because he could not prove that he could be sentenced to life imprisonment without the right to parole if he were extradited, and therefore it was wrong argued.

In the opinion of the aforementioned Court, there is confidence that Carvajal will be tried in the US under “a judicial system that respects the preeminence of law and the principles of a fair trial in which he will have the full opportunity to organize his defense.” with a lawyer.

Similarly, he believes that “El Pollo” does not have to end up with a life sentence without the right to parole because there is nothing written about this.

Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajal arrived in Spain with a false identity in 2019 and remained in hiding for two years, once he found out that the justice of that country was going to extradite him to the US. Since he was arrested in 2021 during an operation, he has submitted two requests for asylum, denied by the Ministry of the Interior, and has maintained what he has called a “collaboration process” with the Justice to delay his delivery as long as possible.

The announcement of Carvajal’s extradition occurs days after Major General Cliver Alcala Cordones, who turned himself in to the US authorities, confessed to having delivered grenade launchers to the Colombian rebel leaders Iván Márquez, leader of the Segunda Marquetalia (FARC dissidents) and Timochenko “by order of the government of Hugo Chávez.”

Hugo Carvajal is wanted in the US on drug trafficking charges, but US authorities believe he could also provide a wealth of information about the alleged drug trafficking activities of current Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his associates.
