Spain announces donation of more than 5 million vaccines to Colombia

The Government of Spain will donate 5,488,470 doses of Pfizer’s vaccine against covid-19 to Colombia in the coming weeks through the Covax mechanism, reported official sources this Sunday.

(200,070 doses of Pfizer vaccines reached the country.)

“In line with its unconditional defense of fair, equitable and universal access to vaccines against covid-19, and in the context of the good health management of the Colombian Government, Spain is preparing to donate a new batch of 5,488 in the coming weeks .470 doses of Pfizer vaccines “, said the Spanish embassy in a statement.

With this delivery, the third in the European country, the total of vaccines donated by Spain to Colombia will amount to 6,546,070 doses of Pfizer and Astrazeneca.

“The donation shows, once again, Spain’s commitment to the health and well-being of the Colombian people, following strictly epidemiological criteria endorsed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)”, added the statement.

FIRST DONOR OF VACCINES TO COLOMBIA

This donation places Spain as the first international vaccine donor to Colombia, followed by the United States, with 6,000,000 doses to date.

Those figures “They demonstrate, once again, Spain’s commitment to the health and well-being of the Colombian people”added the information.

For its part, the Colombian Government expressed its gratitude and highlighted this donation “as a fraternal gesture that contributes to further consolidating relations between the two countries, which are today at the highest level in their history.”

According to the Spanish embassy, ​​the vaccines, which will be distributed early this year with the logistical support of PAHO, is also one more action of Team Europe / Team Europe in Colombia, made up of the European Union and its member states.

“Likewise, this donation is part of Spain’s effort to provide a joint multilateral response to the pandemic, which has particularly hit the Latin American and Caribbean region, with which it maintains close historical and cooperative ties”, adds the statement.

COMMITMENT TO COOPERATION

The embassy recalls that for this reason, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced, during the XXVII Ibero-American Summit, that he was holding in Andorra, a donation of at least 7.5 million vaccines for countries in this American region, which has been materializing since last August.

“Since then, donations to the Latin American and Caribbean region have increased, reaching today more than 20 million assigned doses, which makes Spain the second international donor of vaccines in the region. Of that total, Colombia is the first recipient ”, the statement said.

According to data from the Colombian Ministry of Health, the country has received 84.3 million vaccines against covid-19 and a total of 64,690,489 doses were applied throughout 2021.

Of that total, 28,323,837 million people already have their complete immunization schedule, while 3,324,832 have received a booster dose. The embassy of Spain also highlighted that that country has donated more than 50 million vaccines to date, which positions it as the sixth largest donor in the world and the fourth in the European Union.
