The military police officers (PMs) who killed medical student Marco Aurelio Cárdenas Acosta, aged 22, with a shot at close range, in a hotel in Vila Mariana, in São Paulo, were denounced this Wednesday (8) by the Prosecutor’s Office of the IV Jury Court of the capital. In November last year, during a patrol action, PMs Guilherme Augusto Macedo and Bruno Carvalho do Prado shot the boy, who was unarmed.
The complaint was presented by prosecutors Estefano Kummer, Antonio Folgado and Enzo Boncompagni, who highlighted the vile motive and the impossibility of defending the victim in the crime. Thus, the accused will be charged with qualified homicide.
The Prosecutor’s Office document states that, while one of the police officers caused the young man’s death by shooting at him, the other provided moral and material assistance for the crime.
The crime occurred in the early hours of November 20, when military police officers were patrolling the streets of the neighborhood. According to video camera footage from local businesses, the university student slapped the car’s rear-view mirror and ran. During the chase, he entered the hotel where he was staying with a friend.
In the hotel lobby, a police officer tried to hold the victim by the arm. The other police officer cornered the boy, who even kicked the security officer. In the fight, the student was shot in the abdomen.
“It is true that the police officers acted impelled by ill-conceived motives, in retaliation for the slap given by the victim to the rear-view mirror of the vehicle, using lethal force against a person who was clearly altered and unarmed, with evident abuse of authority and non-compliance with standard operating procedures. Furthermore , the homicide was committed using a resource that made it difficult to defend the victim, given that the police were armed, outnumbered and approached violently, initiating a physical confrontation with the suspect”, says the text of the complaint.
On Friday (3), the Civil Police requested the preventive arrest of the two PMs. PM Guilherme Augusto Macedo was indicted in the police-military investigation (IPM) for intentional homicide, the same situation as his colleague Bruno Carvalho do Prado. Both are away from activities.
