An operation launched this Friday morning (17) in the capital of São Paulo and in the ABC region identified two gas stations as the origin of methanol contamination in drinks in São Paulo. The posts sold alcohol adulterated with methanol to drink counterfeiterswho used it in their products. The gas stations belong to the same family and are in the cities of São Bernardo do Campo and Santo André.
To date, according data from the Ministry of Healthwere confirmed in the country eight deaths resulting from methanol poisoning – six in the state of São Paulo and two in Pernambuco. The total number of confirmed cases of contamination reaches 41.
The police suspects that the criminal scheme is responsible for all the cases in the state of São Paulo.
“The first cycle has been completed. We will continue our efforts to identify the origin of all adulterated drinks in the state”, said the general delegate, Artur Dian.

Further investigations will attempt to determine the extent of the scheme and its relationship with other cases of poisoninglike the two deaths in Pernambuco.
With today’s operation, which targeted the network that supplied a distributor closed last week in São Bernardo do Campo, the relationship of two stations with contamination in bars in ABC and the east and south zones of the capital was identified. At one of the addresses, 7,500 empty containers were seized.
