The City of São Paulo canceled the Pirate Literary Party of the Independent Publishers (Flipei), Marked to start next Wednesday (6), at Praça das Artes. The alternative event, held since 2018 with free attractions, had the contract that allowed the use of the place for the annulled event.
The signed contract provided that, in case of termination, this should be announced a maximum of 15 days before the event. However, the cancellation was announced by the city last Friday less than a week before the event.
By note, the Municipal Theater Foundation said it suspended the event due to the political use of its organizers. For the Municipal Administration, in place of a festival to promote independent literature, the fair had in its programming content exclusively of ideological appeal, with undisguised electoral bias. “For this reason, the foundation suspended the event because it understood that its organizers would use a public structure for political and electoral interests,” the note says.
For the organization of Flipei, the decision is classified as censorship. In a statement on social networks, Flipei said it is moving judicial and political measures to hold the Municipal Theater Foundation, its direction, the São Paulo City Hall and the City Hall.
New spaces
In the same warning, The organization states that programming events will be distributed among the Elza Soares cultural space in the Elíseos fields, the Campo Warehouse, the Luiz Gama Institute and the Sol Y Shadow Bar of Treze de Maio.
“Flipei 2025 will happen, on the same days, same times, in other spaces of the resistance of São Paulo.”
The 2025 edition should be attended by 220 publishers, will hold more than 40 national and international debates, shows, balls, children’s activities and book releases.
