SP City Hall announces increase in bus tickets to R$ 5.30

From January 6th, public transport users will pay more to ride the bus in the city of São Paulo. The city of São Paulo confirmed this Monday (29) that the fare will increase from the current R$5 to R$5.30 starting next Tuesday.SP City Hall announces increase in bus tickets to R$ 5.30

The adjustment was 6%. The percentage exceeds the country’s official inflation, calculated by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The indicator had variation of 4.46% in 12 months, accumulated until November.

The city hall, however, justified that the increase in the fare was lower than the inflation calculated by the Public Transport Consumer Price Index (IPC-Fipe Public Transport), which indicated a 6.5% variation in the year to date.

Through a note, the city hall justified the increase. “Under Mayor Ricardo Nunes’ administration, the ticket value was maintained at R$4.40 for five years. From 2020 to 2025 there was a single update of 13.6%, to R$5. Inflation in this period was 40.31%. The current correction to R$5.30 is less than half the inflationary value of these 5 years”, says the statement from the municipal administration.

According to the city hall, without the subsidy paid by the municipal administration to bus companies, the fare would be even higher, R$11.78.

SPTrans, the city hall company that manages bus transport in the city, informed bus passengers that credits for tickets purchased before 11:59 pm on January 5th, which still cost R$5, will be valid for 180 days. After this period, the amount of R$ 5.30 will be debited. Currently, the top-up limit is 200 fares on the transport voucher and 100 fares on the Bilhete Único Comum.
