South Korea enables Uruguayan beef in block and in cuts

The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), with the approval of the sanitary certificate model prepared by the Secretary of State, managed to enable exports of beef in block and in cuts (“trimming”) to South Korea .

The announcement, according to what was reported by the Presidency, was made by the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), Fernando Mattos. Uruguay is the only client that accesses this market with the condition of being free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination. In addition, the Government continues efforts to reduce the payment of tariffs.

Mattos explained this Friday the 8th to the Presidential Communication that the South Korean government authorities approved the model health certificate prepared by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP). Joint efforts with the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry made it possible to finalize this agreement between the two countries, in response to long-standing requests from the industrial sector.

“It is an important step in the diversification of the markets, which also allows generating a higher value of the merchandise,” he explained.

He recalled that Uruguay is still the only nation in the world that agrees to sell to South Korea and Japan with the condition of being free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination. “Uruguay managed to generate confidence in a highly demanding market,” she said.

The hierarch recognized that Uruguay pays a 38.5% tariff to enter, an aspect that he considered a commercial disadvantage. In that sense, he advanced that there are possibilities to reduce this value to improve the conditions of competitiveness and the preference for Uruguayan meat.

The South Korean beef market has characteristics that make it especially attractive, due to its high volume, growth rate and import prices.
