The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) and the European Union of Football Federations (UEFA) are analyzing the possibility that South American teams can participate in the League of Nations, a tournament born in 2018 to maintain the competitive tone of the European teams.
As detailed this Thursday in Buenos Aires by the head of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, there are many details to specify, mainly regarding what would be the criteria to qualify for the tournament in the midst of an already complicated competition schedule.
“We have Copa América, qualifiers (for the World Cup) and we must decide if one of these two competitions would give ranking to play the Nations League or if a South American Nations League would be attractive to classify teams. We are in that study on our side, “said Domínguez.
Regarding the possibility of a League of Nations with teams from South America, Ceferin said that “it is too early to talk about dates and formats.”
Last June, the Finalissima was played, as a way to recover the old Conmebol-UEFA Champions Cup, between the champion team of South America (Argentina) and Europe (Italy), in a duel that the Albiceleste won 3-0. EFE
