The director of the National Audiovisual Communication Service (SECAN), Gerardo Sotelo, attacked this Sunday against a statement from the Attorney General’s Office (FGN) that used the phrase “las and los” in a statement.
The statement is dated October 14, and talks about “the public statements made by a national legislator regarding the work of the tax teams, published in the press today, October 14, 2022”, and supports the work, precisely, of the tax teams that “have as their mission the investigation and criminal prosecution of crimes throughout the country, and this activity is carried out in strict accordance with the Constitution of the Republic and the law”.
Later, he adds that “It is inconvenient to make generic assertions regarding the good faith and technical independence of the prosecutorsone of the pillars on which the criminal procedure system is based”.

That highlighted phrase was precisely the one that bothered Sotelo.
“The Prosecutor’s Office uses (perhaps due to thoughtless seguidismo) the rubbish ‘las and los’ of progressive neospeak. If he wanted to avoid the use of the masculine as an inclusive generic (which has been used for at least five hundred years) he could use other less grotesque linguistic resources such as ‘prosecutor’s staff’ and ‘those who hold prosecutorial positions’, Sotelo asserted through his account. “Spanish also allows one to express oneself without denoting gender (that in the Prosecutor’s Office there are men and women, nobody doubts or came to the point). Militant language is for militant spaces. The State is not one of them”, he concluded.
The Prosecutor’s statement alluded to a series of questions made by the senator of the National Party, Jorge Gandini, who questioned processes and times of the judicial body.
