SOS Cuba: a citizen response to the health crisis on the Island

Cuba, Crisis en Cuba, SOS Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — The health crisis that Cuba is going through has brought with it the response of hundreds of Cubans inside and outside the Island. This was stated by Massiel Rubio Hernández, a Cuban activist based in Spain, and Pedro López, a relative of political prisoner Andy García Lorenzo.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began to hit Cuba hard, Massiel Rubio has been active collecting and sending humanitarian aid from Spain. Aware that many Cubans receive remittances and medicines from relatives abroad, the activist focused on supporting those who lack that support.

“Our priority is those people who are without support of any kind, which is also the majority. That’s where we concentrate our resources,” Rubio told CubaNet.

The activist added that Cuba is going through a crisis of dengue which has already begun to claim fatalities.

“The alarm sounds to us always before the regime officially recognizes it. He went through COVID-19 and it’s happening again now. They always take months to admit what is happening,” Rubio said, referring to the dengue outbreak.

For aid shipments to Cuba, exiles try to find out the real needs of what people who lack support from abroad need.

“Based on that, we try to send the aid, and always directly, so that it does not pass through the hands of the regime, because if that happens, we do not know what will reach them,” argued the activist.

From the province of Villa Clara, the activist Pedro López, a relative of the political prisoner Andy Garcia Lorenzo, is one of the Cubans who has tried to support those most in need. In statements to CubaNetassured that there is nothing in the island’s hospitals and that the situation is extremely critical.

“There are no reagents to do analysis, there are no medications. As we have done on other occasions, we are coordinating to bring medicines, to take supplies to hospitals,” López explained.

In addition to dengue hemorrhagic fever and COVID-19, Cubans are going through endless ailments and complex situations, such as food shortages, which is also leaving a terrible toll on the most vulnerable people.
