On July 17, the Ministry of Agricultural Defense of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Map) of Brazil issued the SDA/Map Ordinance No. 1336, in which the phytosanitary requirements that must meet the Mexican fresh avocado shipments must meet.
The National Service of Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (Senasica) and Map agreed in the Plan for measures so that the avocado is free of quarantine pests, as well as bareadoers of the fruit bone.
This provision entered into force on Thursday 17, and dry will be responsible for authorizing the orchards and packers that comply with the provisions.

Mexico, first world avocado producer
According to Senasica and Agriculture, Mexico is the main avocado producer in the world, with almost 3 million tons per year and exports 46% of its production to countries such as the United States, Japan, Spain, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, France, United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands.
According to information from the Ministry of Economy, in 2024, international sales of fresh or dry avocados reached 3,969 million dollars (MDD), and the main buyer was the United States, with a total of 3,444 million pesos.
From the list of buyers, it is followed by Canada (257 million pesos), Japan (108 million pesos), El Salvador (38 million pesos), and Honduras (31.6 MDD).
By April 2025, international avocado sales added 449 MDD, and not purchased were not made.
Michoacán de Ocampo is the state that concentrates 89.1% of Mexico’s avocado market, which represents 3,954 MDD. From the entity, the municipality of Uruapan carries the production of 69% nationwide.
Jalisco is the second producer, with a distant 8.42%, but representing 333 million pesos. Third is Mexico City, with 1.37% (54.3 MDD) in the Mayoria Miguel Hidalgo (28 million pesos) and Álvaro Obregón (25.2 million pesos).
There are more than 500 avocado varieties, but Mexico is a generator of three more important such as Hass, Creole and Strong.
Origin of Mexican avocado
Agriculture reported that the avocado tree is originally from Mesoamerica, possibly from central Mexico or one of the high parts of Guatemala.
According to the Secretariat, the first evidence of its edible use was in the Coxcatlán cave in Tehuacán, Puebla with an age of 7,000 to 8,000 years.
