Soriano will invest in roads for cellulose port

The Soriano municipality will make one of its first economic investments for the first port of access to the sea that the department will have. It will be located on the Uruguay River, north of La Agraciada beach, between Estancia Ordoñana and the mouth of the Arenal stream.

Mayor Guillermo Besozzi announced to EL ECO that he signed an agreement to build an access road from Route 21 to the property where the port terminal will be built.
This will pave the way for the first works required for the construction of this port in Soriano. It involves an investment of US$ 300 million and is the point of departure for the cellulose that will be produced by the Paracel plant in Paraguay.

According to reports from Paracel itself – disseminated by Paraguayan media – it is currently in the process of planting eucalyptus trees and by 2027 it would build and have in operation the cellulose production plant, under the free zone regime in Asunción, in which several capitals will intervene, such as the Zapag group.

Besozzi told EL ECO: “We are presenting a project to the OPP (Office of Planning and Budget of the national government) to build a bitumen road in conjunction with the company that will build the port of Los Paraguayos.”

Last week, “the mayor’s office presented a project to OPP for 2,400,000 dollars, where we will be responsible for half and the other half will be provided by the company.” The road will have “asphalt from the route to the port grounds, because it will be needed for the entry and exit of trucks, for everything.”

For this work “we would have to expropriate, Colonization should give us an area for the street.”
This access road is of great importance – says the mayor – “when they want to start the work, they have ninety-something permits obtained. So it is quite advanced.”

Regarding the other port project, the PTP, at the mouth of the Arenal stream, the point is that “they want a free zone and it is not up to us, the Municipality, to resolve that issue. We are working with the National Government, with the Ministry of Economy, on the corresponding requirements.”

The mayor concludes by highlighting the great importance of the port. It will be “the first in Soriano with access to the world by sea.”
