While receiving medical attention, the 16-year-old baseball prospect and son of journalist Miriam Cruz García, Imanol Mercado Cruz, died after being hit by a vehicle.
The incident occurred when a speeding vehicle hit him as he was walking towards his practices at the play, on the edge of the Duarte highway, near the Central Bank.
According to versions, after filling gasoline at a fuel station at the entrance of Santiago, the driver of the vehicle left the marginal at high speed in a Porsche vehicle. In that outburst he hit Mercado Cruz head-on.
A 911 unit transferred the young baseball prospect to the José María Cabral y Báez Hospital. There he unfortunately passed away during surgery.
The journalist’s son lived with his mother in the La Española urbanization, being her only son.
It also transpired that after the incident the perpetrator got out of the vehicle and would have fled.
Several have expressed their regret to Miriam Cruz and the other relatives. Among them representatives of the various journalistic unions, journalism professionals and communicators in particular.
