Santo Domingo.-The mission of the Organization of American States (UN) in Haiti has been on alert due to the combination of arms trafficking coming from the United States for the gangs that control that territory and that in turn are supplied with ammunition trafficked through the porous border with the Dominican Republic.
That mission sounded the alarm to the Dominican Republic when it detected that ammunition in the possession of some gang members was in containers identified as belonging to the Dominican National Police, a source linked to the investigation explained to EL DÍA.
Although the Ministry of the Interior and Police has not officially offered further details of the criminal action revealed by the same institution, EL DÍA was informed that the UN warned about the detection of ammunition in Haiti coming from the Dominican Republic and which were presumed to be from the Police. .
Interior and Police revealed last Thursday that the investigation, led by intelligence agencies of the Dominican Republic, with direct support from the director general of the National Police, Major General Ramón Antonio Guzmán Peralta, managed to identify a criminal network that operated within the police institution.
The network was dedicated to the irregular extraction of ammunition from the entity’s warehouses, which were then sold to individuals.
Although the note does not refer to that aspect, EL DÍA was informed that among the buyers there were people who sold it illegally in Haiti.
The investigation has revealed that this network had the participation of both high-ranking officers (several colonels) and subordinates, revealing the complexity and depth of this operation.
As a result of these investigations, several officers have been detained and it is expected that in the next few hours they will be brought to justice, where coercive measures will be requested against them.
