There are around 10,000 workers who were laid off on December 31 after completing the months of work, by lottery, rotating 12 days a month, receiving 10,500 liquid pesos per month.
Among the workers there are many heads of household and at the end of the wages they were left with zero income for their children, hence the struggle to have the program extended.
The authorities chose to say no, and carry out the new draw in May, with an opportunity for all those who register in that month. Those drawn will enter to work next June.
In the department of Colonia there were 387 workers, between 18 and 65 years of age, who performed tasks at the service of the municipalities.
Although the laid off workers lifted the hunger strike, they decided to maintain a tent in front of the Executive Tower.
Some deny the secure job they have, and other Uruguayans are desperate to work even as day laborers and for 10,500 pesos a month.
