Sofomes seek to avoid reputational contagion due to the Trinitas case

Trinitas had a greater presence in Nuevo León and was dedicated to factoring, loans to SMEs and payroll advances. Being an unregulated entity, there is no data from the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) that shows the number of assets or loans granted.

While the bankruptcy process is underway, Trinitas continues to operate under judicial supervision and with precautionary measures that protect the assets and interests of investors, according to a statement sent to clients.

“At this stage, we will seek to establish individual contact with each of the creditors to review their situation and coordinate the communication and conciliation processes,” the company added.

Sofomes are entities dedicated to lending money, they cannot raise funds from clients but they can invite investors to allocate money for the operation.

Asked about this case, the Association of Multiple Purpose Financial Companies in Mexico (ASOFOM) said that this is an isolated case that does not represent the sector as a whole.

“Since January of this year, we have worked on the positioning of SOFOMes as key institutions in last mile financing, particularly for those MSMEs that are not served by traditional banking,” he highlighted.

Javier Garza, national president of ASOFOM, highlighted the work of Sofomes within the framework of Plan México promoted by the federal government.

To avoid cases like Tinitas, Asofom launched a series of preventive and corrective actions such as the implementation of self-regulation for company funding.

Additionally, adherence to money laundering prevention agreements stands out. “More than 97% of our members have signed the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) Agreement, with an impact on strict measures to prevent money laundering and financing of terrorism,” said Garza.
