Socialist Youth denounce that in Nicaragua opponents who "fight for democracy" are imprisoned

The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSYfor its acronym in English) approved a resolution in support of the people of Nicaragua for the socio-political situation that the country has been facing since April 2018.

The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo ordered the quelling of social protests against the regime’s inaction in the fire at the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve and the failed social security reforms.

“Since April 2018, Nicaragua has suffered a political crisis due to the repression experienced by the Ortega Murillo dictatorship, where it exercises absolute control over all the powers of the State and does not allow citizen mobilization,” says the resolution approved by IUSY .

The members of the socialist political organization also demanded the release of all political prisoners, that an independent investigation be launched into all the events of recent years and that free and transparent elections be held.

“Currently in Nicaragua there are more than 180 political prisoners, including students, social and political leaders, who are suffering inhumane treatment and are in solitary confinement cells. Among the political prisoners are members of the Renovadora Youth”, highlights the resolution.

The Renovadora Democratic Union (Unamos) is a member of IUSY through the Renovadora Youth, the youth group of the Nicaraguan political organization. Bruno Goncalves, general secretary of IUSY, stated that the directors of Unamos are in jail only because “they are fighting for democracy, for justice, for freedom, for a better country.”

Goncalves affirmed that from the organization he represents they will not rest until democratic changes are achieved in the country and that “everyone is necessary, so that Nicaraguans achieve a freer, more democratic and, above all, more dignified future for all young people, the young women who are in Nicaragua suffering on their skin the authoritarian regimes that continue to support the autocratic regime of Daniel Ortega.
