Socialist Party maintains a lack of definition and calls to form a single list of the ruling party: “If we do not unite, we will be at a disadvantage in a historic fight”

Upon entering the meeting of the political commission of the Socialist Party (PS), its president, Paulina Vodanovic, said that it was going to be a long day, along with calling for unity, although without advancing anything up to that minute. “We are going to intensify, in these days that remain for the registration of the list, all our efforts,” commented the PS helmsman, along with declaring that “this does not end today, nor tomorrow, but on February 6 with the registration of the lists, with a view to the election of the Constitutional Council of the constituent process”.

The mood and spirit, prior to the meeting at the party headquarters, according to Vodanovic, was that of unity, of loyal support for the Government of President Gabriel Boric and of concretizing all his energies in having a new Constitution. “This is how we are going to raise it in the political commission and I hope that we can make the maximum effort for unity,” he added.

The slogan was maintained and, after almost two hours of meeting, Vodanovic confirmed that, as the party’s central committee said last Saturday, they will seek to “build the maximum unity of the progressive forces.”

“We need that unity, to be able to have the best representation in the Constitutional Council, which will allow us to have a new Constitution born in democracy,” said the PS helmsman, emphasizing that for the community “this is not just any year,” since that ninety years of socialist history have been completed and also the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état.

“This year, we have the possibility of building a new Constitution for Chile and the PS must think about Chile. Therefore, the agreement of this political commission today is to continue working with the maximum possible unity and call on progressive forces and all those part of the Government to join us,” said Paulina Vodanovic, from Paris 873 street.

Pending a more concrete decision, the call of the Socialist Party is as follows: “The right is united by interests and the left is divided by ideas.” Therefore, “if we do not unite, we will be at a disadvantage in a historic fight, in the opportunity to write a new Constitution in democracy.” Under this slogan, Vodanovic recalled President Salvador Allende, “who died in La Moneda defending the Constitution of 1925 and consequently it is the duty of this party to honor him with the greatest possible unity.”

“That is the decision of this political commission”, reiterated the president of the PS. “We are united, thinking about the Government, about how to support the Government, about the transformations that are needed, and about how we strengthen ourselves to support in all spaces,” he specified, also awaiting “certain conversations” from other parties, to “take on that task with maximum unity”.

Vodanovic explained that in parallel, candidates will work on the list, according to Servel’s criteria, while they will hold “political talks” with progressive forces.

“We have accepted President Boric’s call to facilitate this dialogue that has also been opened thanks to President Michelle Bachelet and her call is for a unitary list. We are not delaying a decision. We are opening the way for unity,” Paulina concluded. Vodanovic.

Hopeful that the PPD and the PR “can change their option”

“The Socialist Party is going to come out together. I am convinced of that,” said the Socialist deputy Juan Santana, prior to the meeting of the political commission of the community.

Deputy Santana assured that within the PS there are many who are fighting until the last minute so that there is a list of unity, where all the actors come together and even beyond the Government. In his opinion, it would be ideal for “everyone who wants to carry out the transformations in this country, from the DC to the PC” to be part of this effort.

In this sense, the parliamentarian stated that they are hopeful and optimistic that these games will be played until the last minute, also convinced that the PPD and the PR “can change their option and come together in the same effort to compete in the election of constitutional advisors”, as has been proposed by former President Bachelet and President Boric.

“If the PR and PPD do not listen to the call,” Santana warned, “we believe that there is a convergence on that list with parties that want unity,” since “this election is about choosing those who are going to draft the New Constitution, nor more or less.”

Also in the run-up to the resolution, regarding the formation of electoral lists for the Constitutional Council elections, the socialist deputy Daniel Manouchehri affirmed that Chile needs to overcome the Socialismo Democrático and Apruebo Dignidad coalitions, and “walk into the future with a new coalition.” .

“Since our foundation, the socialists believe in the unity of the forces that seek social changes. Chile requires that we overcome these two coalitions and look to the future with a new coalition, which allows us to build solid majorities to make changes in society,” he said. .

Along these lines, the parliamentarian for the Coquimbo Region stressed that the political project of the left “is strengthened with an alliance between the Socialist Party and Convergence, to which all the forces of change must also come together, such as the Democratic Revolution, the Communist Party and even the Party for Democracy itself, as equal partners”.

“The unity of the socialist forces is essential to move the Government forward, but above all, to carry out the transformations that Chile requires. We are going to actively promote this debate. Only with unity is the future possible,” he closed.

Meeting with President Boric

Also in the preview, around 4:00 p.m., the president of the Party for Democracy (PPD), Natalia Piergentili, shared a photo with the other three helmsmen of her coalition, with a message that said “having lunch with the friends who are presidents of the Democratic Socialism”.

Piergentili omitted, however, that, around 2:00 p.m., they had met with President Gabriel Boric, at his home in the Yungay neighborhood, together with the other party presidents, Patricio Morales (PL), Paulina Vodanovic (PS) and Leonardo Cubillos (PR).

According to government sources, the President summoned them to address precisely this issue: the electoral pact for the Constitutional Council elections. And it is that the President has urged the ruling party to compete on a single list. In fact, Gabriel Boric—who is on vacation—according to those who knew about this day’s meeting, asked all the helmsmen, particularly the PPD, a “last effort” to compete on a single list.
