Socialist International asks Ortega to "reconsider" removal of nationality from political prisoners

The Socialist International expressed its “concern” about the reform of article 21 of the Political Constitution of Nicaragua that deprives the 222 political prisoners exiled to the United States of their Nicaraguan nationality, yesterday, Thursday, February 9. The steamroller of Sandinista deputies approved the amendment urgently with the favorable vote of 89 legislators.

The organization considers that the change in the constitution is an “affront to the fundamental human rights and freedom of the citizens of Nicaragua.” For the reform to enter into force, it must be approved again in the next legislature, recalled the Socialist International.

“With this declaration we call on the Nicaraguan Parliament to revoke this punitive law that significantly undermines fundamental human rights and the very principles on which democracy prevails,” says the statement of the world organization.

In addition, they thank the United States and the international community for their efforts to achieve the release of all political prisoners in Nicaragua. He also thanked the Government of Spain, led by the president of the Socialist International, for offering Spanish nationality to those released from the Nicaraguan dictatorship.

Ortega ordered the exile of 222 political persons to the United States on February 9. In addition, he ordered his deputies to urgently approve a constitutional reform to withdraw the detainees’ Nicaraguan citizenship. Now these people are in the North American country under a humanitarian parole.
