Social organizations in Uruguay "repudiate" violence by the government of Dina Boluarte in Peru

The undersigned social organizations of Uruguay express our deepest rejection of the violence exercised by the government of Dina Boluarte against the peoples and organizations that manifest, in the full exercise of freedom of expression, the demand for urgent elections.

To silence the voices of the peoples and social movements, the repressive forces have violated the most basic democratic principles and norms.

As expressed by the National Human Rights Coordinator of Peru: «The response of the Peruvian State to the mobilizations has been of unprecedented brutality in the history of democracy in the country, in this century. Massacres perpetrated in three cities, along with more limited extrajudicial executions in other places.

At the moment the repression has a balance of 58 deaths, 9 of them minors, due to the lack of political will of the State to build a political solution to the crisis.

The government has promoted the disproportionate use of repressive forces, the militarization of the streets, torture in places of detention, and the restriction of rights, through declarations of a state of emergency at the national level. It criminalizes the voices of the Aymara and Quechua peoples of the south, encouraging racism and discrimination, also violating university autonomy, invading the University of San Marcos in Lima, the oldest in Latin America.

The native peoples and peasants of the South have led the protests and their demands and voices reached Lima to confront structural racism and the permanent looting of their lands and worldviews.

We reject the criminalization of protest, the smear campaigns against those who legitimately express a political and electoral solution to the crisis, and all forms of violence and abuse of human rights.

We stand in solidarity with the pain of the victims of violence, and we join the demands for justice of the human rights organizations in Peru that demand the cessation of the current government and the beginning of an authentic democratic process in the broadest sense that recognizes fully the multi-ethnic and multi-national composition of the state, guaranteeing a broad representation of native and Afro-descendant peoples.
