SANTO DOMINGO. – The political platform Social Justice (JS) expressed through a statement, that the best tribute on this International Women’s Day that is commemorated today, is to “advocate for more rights and more prominence” for Dominican women and the world.
“It is the working, revolutionary woman who demands changes in working and living conditions,” the organization led by former senator Julio César Valentín said in a statement.
They emphasize that much progress has been made, but that major issues related to the expansion of rights in favor of women are still pending.
“It is the fight for gender equality, the fight against child marriage and adolescent pregnancy; It is the fight against violence against women, it is the fight for a more equal participation of women in state spaces, ”she emphasizes.
For more justice and equality
Social Justice (JS) was born as a platform to fight for equality, justice, transparency, inclusion and participation of sectors excluded from the dynamics of national development.
That is why one of the main bets of the nascent organization is gender equality as a banner of struggle, further deepening the formal changes towards more substantial changes in favor of women.
“Women continue to be victims of discrimination and exclusion, so from this platform the necessary efforts will be promoted to change this reality towards higher levels of inclusion in all orders in favor of women,” they said.
The origin of International Women’s Day dates back to the end of the 19th century, when workers in the textile industry in New York organized a strike to demand their rights. Later, it was proclaimed by the UN in 1977 as a way of highlighting the struggle of women for equality, justice, peace and development.
