NEW YORK.- During the 144 days that have elapsed this year, 17,196 people have died from bullets throughout the United States, according to statistics from the organization “Archive of Armed Violence” (GVA) based in Washington DC.

This, at the rate of a little more than 119 daily deaths. Likewise, in the same period, 14,247 people have been injured, some remaining in serious condition. This at a rate of 98 people daily.

The GVA classifies deaths as follows: 7,626 due to homicides, at a rate of 52 per day. For suicide there are 9,570, at a rate of 66 daily.

Of that amount, in the Big Apple, the authorities have reported that in the last three days two people have been shot dead, one on Canal St. in Lower Manhattan, and the other in front of the NYCHA building, Polo Grounds Houses, in the 155th Street and Eighth Avenue, in Harlem.

Likewise, two wounds, one on 183rd Street with Walton Avenue and the other on 500 Trinity Avenue, in the Bronx.

The number of suicides in the US rose from less than 19,000 in 2009 to more than 24,000 in 2018. Over the 10 years, white men made up the majority of those deaths, with 4.95 million years of productive life lost. .

Meanwhile, the majority of homicide-related deaths were among black men, with 3.2 million years of productive life lost.

These latest data were provided in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) National Vital Statistics Reports and the Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System database.

The US is also the country with the most weapons in the hands of civilians. The Second Amendment to the Constitution protects the right of the American people to keep and bear arms. Only Mexico and Turkey surpass it in deaths from firearms.

The probability of dying from bullets in the USA is 24 times higher than in Spain and 100 times higher than in Japan.

In a recent article, The New York Times asked 32 specialists what measures would be most effective in preventing mass killings.

Proposals in the same direction: outlaw high-capacity magazines, prevent weapons from being sold to violent criminals, and ban semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles.
